Steroid Damaged Skin - Bits & Pieces

Hello Everyone and all the best for 2004. I have been absent from my clinic for much of January, so this newsletter will be a bit light on. Next month I'll be back into full operational mode.

Having said that, this year is already shaping up to be a very busy one for me. With my website becoming increasingly popular, requests for medical advice and wheatgrass have increased considerably. I am more than happy to answer enquiries and assist where I can, but sometimes it may take a few days to respond. So please be patient. Thank you.

One enquiry was from a reader who grows and juices wheatgrass every day. His question was about wheatgrass spray versus cream versus freshly juiced wheatgrass. "When I read the ingredients of the purchased spray and cream I was shocked to see how little wheatgrass was in the contents......What are the consequences of applying too much spray/cream/grass?"

Taken in order:

The only information I have about freshly juiced wheatgrass for healing is anecdotal and is on public record. Any internet search under "wheatgrass" will for instance bring up a number of websites using the oft-quoted observations of Ann Wigmore, the fresh wheatgrass juice guru who recorded numerous instances of healing, from eczema to body odour to stomach ulcers. Because I do not adhere to the popular conception that wheatgrass heals by virtue of its nutritional properties, and because I achieve similar results to other experimenters using my extract, I have not had the need to use the juice.

I have previously mentioned here the importance of the
"grass juice factor" (which contains growth factor(s) and fertility factor(s)) as the main healing ingredient(s) in wheatgrass. This extract is included in the spray and cream I talk about, and appears to have similar efficacy to fresh wheatgrass juice. Unlike the juice, it is a colourless non-staining liquid, and its potency lasts for years - quite possibly indefinitely.

As for the concentration of wheatgrass in the commercial products, this information is not actually mentioned on the product label.

Finally, the consequences of applying too much spray/cream/grass would be at worst, minor, unless the individual was hypersensitive to one or more constituents of wheatgrass. This does happen from time to time, but in my experience is rare.

Recovery of Steroid Damaged Skin
For those interested in the efficacy of wheatgrass in recovering steroid-damaged skin, (usually without rebound effects), I have posted a new case history on my website. As you have probably guessed, this is a pet subject of mine which is not surprising considering the large number of patients wheatgrass has helped.

This particular young woman has suffered from severe, generalised atopic eczema since childhood. Her skin has caused her great distress and social isolation over the years. When she first attended my clinic in August last year, she lacked self-confidence and was quite understandably angry at a condition that had turned her into a social pariah with never a partner. It is very gratifying to report that, thanks to wheatgrass, she is now happily enjoying her first relationship.

I wonder how many of my colleagues who are unwilling or unable to remove their pharmaceutical straitjacket enjoy the privileged world of safe, hands-on healing that I do. Physical healing that is often greatly outweighed by the social, psychological and emotional benefits patients experience.

Upon Reflection

In 1995, when I first started using wheatgrass clinically, I jotted down numerous anecdotes in an attempt to find a "unifying theory" to hopefully help me understand in some way, just how the extract worked. This resulted in a brief 12 page report titled "Evidence suggesting immunomodulatory efficacy from a herbal extract", which caused members at a certain medical committee meeting to which I had submitted the report to dissolve into laughter.

As Mahatma Ghandi is reported to have said:

First, they ignore you. Then they laugh at you. Then they fight you. Then you win.

Looks like I'm in for a fight!

Kindest regards, and here's to a great year.

Dr. Chris Reynolds.
